Fifth Saturday Contra Dance -CHANGE OF VENUE CHANGE of LOCATION We are now hosting the Fifth Saturday Contra Dances at the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena Woman’s Club of South Pasadena 1424 Fremont Ave South Pasadena, CA 91030 Dancing: 7:00pm – 11:00pm Caller: Susan Kendig from Portland Oregon Susie Kendig began calling in the SF Bay Area in 1996 as a favor to a friend and thought her calling career would last one (maybe two) evenings. Much to her surprise, she kept getting invited back. Now her clear concise teaching, commitment to fun, and cheerful aplomb keep dancers grinning and grooving. Musicians: Stepwise Stepwise, Olivia Breidenthal and Liam Lewis Liam Lewis has been a prominent multi-instrumentalist in Los Angeles’s Folk music community for the last 15 years. He can be seen headlining Highland Scottish games all over the country on fiddle with multiple Celtic bands, or playing the main stages at Bluegrass festivals on mandolin with his Bluegrass band Hot October. With Stepwise, he has taught and performed at Fairbanks Arts Festival in Alaska for the last two summers. Olivia Breidenthal is a fiddle player from Los Angeles, California. In California, she plays with Stepwise and other local Celtic and Americana bands performing at venues up and down the West Coast. She also played with the Broadway touring production of Oklahoma! at the Ahmanson Theater as well as the new musical Transparent at the Mark Taper Forum. Boxing Day Contra & English Country Dance Dec 26 – Bring your Family and Friends!
Come enjoy our Holiday Dance on Thursday, December 26th, at Skandia Hall in Pasadena. This holiday dance brings a program of English country-inspired Contra dances and Contra-inspired English Country dances! There will be something for everyone at this dance party! . Music will be provided by Jeff Spero, and Kira Ott. Gender neutral calling will be provided by James Hutson whose expertise in both dance forms will show how English Country and Contra dance share the same roots and are closely related to each other. The dance will run from 7 to 10 PM. Admission is FREE! Skandia Hall in Pasadena 2031 E Villa St Pasadena, CA 91107 Bring your holiday treats and leftovers to share with friends. Savory and Sweet are welcome! Snacks will be available all evening long 6:00 Doors open 6:3o Newcomers dancing tips! 7:00pm – 10:00pm Dance Party! Caller: James Hutson Musicians: Jeff Spero Jeffrey has toured around the country playing concerts, festivals, and dances. From Celtic to Americana, Jeffrey can be heard with bands such as Syncopaths, Rhythm Raptors, and Lift Ticket. Kira Ott Kira Ott is an Irish fiddler and violist from Los Angeles who has been very active on the LA Irish music scene for many years. She grew up studying classical viola, but was always drawn to Irish music. As a teenager, she took up the fiddle and hasn’t set it down since. After spending many winters traveling to Donegal Ireland to learn at the Frankie Kennedy Winter School, she took a few summers festival hopping around Ireland, learning from and playing with many of the greats. She has performed and toured with numerous bands and in well known venues including The Ford Amphitheater and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Sound Engineers: Dan Vilter & Chris Yoder Refreshments are potluck. Please bring some of that good holiday food you probably have around the house and share with your friends. Bring your holiday treats to share. 6:00 Doors open. arrive early to socialize with friends and soon to be friends. 6:30 a beginner lesson will be taught to help make it an enjoyable experience for everyone. 7:00 Dancing begins. There will be a break in the middle of the evening. 10:00 Dancing ends. Admission: IS FREE! Donations are accepted, Please help keep this dance free of charge. Welcome to our new 2nd Saturday dance in South Pasadena! St. James Episcopal Church 1325 Monterey Rd. South Pasadena, 91030 It’s 3 blocks up the street from the Woman’s Club of South Pasadena Caller: Lindsay Verbil Band: Jeff Spero & Frank Hoppe Sound: Scott Arfin Lesson 6:30 p.m. Dancing 7:00-10:00 pm. There will be an intermission with a snack break and a chance to socialize with other dancers. Gender-Neutral calling, role terms Larks and Robins. All levels are welcome, so whether you’re dusting off your dance shoes or have never heard of contra dance, you’re sure to have fun! Just bring shoes and clothes you feel comfortable & fabulous dancing in.
